Thinking about a Better Earth |

Last fall, B.E.S.T. volunteers met with teachers from Cole and Spofford to review the results from our parent/teacher survey conducted in September and “Think Green” came to life! Are you interested in fostering your child's education and preserving environment? Please take a moment to look at our website and consider a few of the environmental enrichment programs that are being considered. Perhaps you too will be inspired to "Think Green" and lend a helping hand to one of the best organizations around!” Email Bonni Theriault at bnt@brandpwr.com for more information.

| We wanted to thank all the families that donated to the B.E.S.T. Snowflakes for Teachers campaign this Holiday Season. There were more than 150 snowflake donations made. The snowflakes are posted in the lobbies of both schools. With your help, we raised almost $2,000 in funds that will directly benefit the teachers through professional development courses, SMART Board/laptop training, teaching materials, and guest speakers. Thank You!
Donations in honor of teachers
and administrators can be made at anytime throughout the year.
Please download the STAR Certificate order form and send it along with your donation to: B.E.S.T. , P.O. Box 176, Boxford, MA 01921

A Quest for Learning
On December 2, Spofford Pond fifth graders were treated to a day-long visit by Boxford resident and author, Kathleen Benner Duble. In preparation for the visit, fifth graders read Duble's historical novel Quest, a fictional account of Henry Hudson's last voyage. Knowing they would be able to question the author added incentive for the students to delve into the characters and plot of the book, and their classroom book discussions were both thoughtful and insightful.
With a slide show presentation on a SMART Board, Duble discussed how she finds ideas for her books, researches an historical period, and creates an authentic voice for each character. Fifth graders then tried their hand at writing through an historical character's voice, and several were brave enough to share their work with the author and their group. Later in the week, our student writers practiced creating internal dialogue, developing their voices, during their writing blocks.
Duble finished with a question and answer session in a game format during which our fifth graders were able to show their deeper understanding the book, in addition to asking for writing advice. This day-long author visit, as well as three classroom sets of the book Quest, was funded through a B.E.S.T. grant awarded spring 2008.
While the 2008-2009 school year is a transitional year for B.E.S.T., we have awarded several grants featured below. Ask your child about two upcoming Educator-in-Residence programs both of which promise to be a hit among students.

| New Board Members |
Please join us in welcoming Ellie Benson and Bonnie Theriault to the B.E.S.T. Board! Bonni is guiding B.E.S.T. in working with the schools to uncover new programs and initiatives to enrich curriculum and has been the driving force behind our new “Think Green” initiative. Ellie, a longtime B.E.S.T. volunteer, has been instrumental in making our annual Homes Tour a success. As a new board member, Ellie is busy introducing new volunteers to help support our mission.
